The slab gets its character in the next forty minutes. A bull float strikes off the coarse surface, then finishers move to knee boards to machine-trowel until the bleed water runs off and the surface rings tight. Stem walls rise from those footings like the bones of a forearm. We brace the ply form panels with walers and snap ties that hold the section to an eighth-inch tolerance even while the pump pounds concrete against the face, and the concrete is vibrated in lifts so no honeycomb hides behind the future backfill. The finishing happens behind the scene first. A perforated drain line buries at the footing, wrapped in geotextile and connected daylighting to a clean-out, then a granular drainage stone goes in behind the stem so groundwater cannot pile up and push the wall forward. Weep holes pierce the lower course at the drain elevation, and we bed the structure on a frost-protected footing so Utah winters lift the tree roots and the driveway instead of the wall. Before backfill arrives the crew locks the stem braces in place — the concrete needs a full, quiet cure while the mechanical forces reorganise behind it.

Resurfacing is the second career of a flat floor. Jointing is where commercial slabs are won. We draw the contraction joint pattern — typically a grid that squares with the column line and breathes with the rack aisle — and saw-cut it within the first twenty-four hours after the trowel burnish, so the planned flex lines pre-empt the spontaneous ones. Thickened edges receive anchors where shelving clamps down, and dowels or keyways transfer load where heavy wheels will cross a joint.
